MJ, Kendra, and Maddie did a great job helping their students make this great Holiday Parade Project. Also, MJ's class is coming back January 4th to in-person instruction.

Melissa and April put together a cute Holiday Breakfast Bag for their choir kids for pick-up so they could continue their Holiday Breakfast Tradition.

 Thanks to Kim for organizing and staying late to run the Graduation Pictures on Tuesday for our 8th grade students.  It went very smoothly. 

Next week we have data meetings and Debbie, Nicole and Todd have been working on how we can help some of our struggling students.  Two expectations for all teachers is that you have reached out and had communication with the struggling student's parents and that you are utilizing the office hours to schedule time to meet with the students individually.  Please make sure that you have tried these interventions before we move to the next level. 

Also please reach out to me to help in these situations...I am more than willing to help make contact with hard to reach parents and had pretty good short term success this week. 

Students who have IEPS aren't "special education students" they are general education students who receive special education supports.

So my Principal Advisory group loves the new schedule.  The students think the longer classes give teachers more time to get through the lessons and therefore they have less homework.  They also like the lunch break with more classes after and the individual help option along with longer CFU's.

Early Feedback on the new schedule has been positive.  Please share any insights you have with me in case we make changes/improvements in the future.  

The staff learning meeting was fun and I was able to learn much more about everyone.  We are going to compile the book and movie recommendations and send them out. I was able to make my way around the building in-between Zoom meetings and it looked like everyone also had a productive day of planning.

I have been walking the halls a lot lately and have been extremely impressed with the tone and fluctuation of voice that I have been hearing from our staff as they talk with their students via Zoom.  I know that is a weird complement but it really does go a long way to increase student engagement so nice job.

Thanks to Nicole and Melissa for their assistance in helping with supply pick-up on Tuesday.  We had a little over 3/4th of the parents come and have had many pick-ups the last two days.   Kim also eblasted the parents yesterday to please come and pick-up their supplies if they had not done so already.

I watched a documentary called the Social Dilemma on Netflix.  It shows how social media is changing and influencing our lives in many ways, most of them not good.  It is definitely worth a look and part of it deals specifically with its effect on students. Please watch this short trailer: 

  

I think I mentioned it before, but I was able to jump into Specials Team yesterday and I love their positive Thursday where everyone goes around and talks about something that has worked well with their students or projects/lessons.  It is such a great way to hear from others all of the positive things that are happening in the building and also gives ideas for lessons/activities

Melissa arranged for a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra to Zoom with our students.  It was fun having a professional musician present and answer questions from our students. Very inspiring for our young musicians.

MJ did a great job of showing her kids about the election  as they had to go to a voting both, fill out a ballot for lunch options, sign their name and wait for results (not as long as our country has).  

Veterans Day is Wednesday and even though our students will be off because a Remote Learning Planning Day Melissa has organized a way to celebrate our Veterans with the help of Chris F, Matt Turek, April, Angela, and Danielle.  There will be a video with a special choir and Band performance, reading of Flanders Field and other background information all tied up in a special BB300 Wednesday edition.  We will ask that you share it within normal means and w will also share through social media.  Special shout out to our Veterans Rich and Bill.

 It was great seeing kids in all of the classrooms this week. I am extremely proud of the great job you guys are doing with our in-person and remote students.  Teaching safety procedures and curriculum in-person and through new technology has been difficult but you have gotten the job done.

I am also grateful to everyone for practicing safe procedures outside of school that has allowed our staff attendance to be strong and our school to operate smoothly.  Special thanks to Holly and Mr. Durkin for being our super subs this week. 

Thanks to Vanessa, Ellen, Danielle and Angela for the quick turn around with the devices this week.  We appreciate all of your hard work.  

Greg has worked out a system to give subs  access to Canvas, Zoom and powerschool.  I will be testing it out and sending out directions soon.

 Thanks to Dr. Woell for having the Staff Town Hall meeting and answering all of the staff questions.  Having open lines of communication is important and appreciated.

Teachers will continue to take attendance 1st period each day for students that are scheduled to be in the building.  All asynchronous students are assumed to be present unless we are notified by parents otherwise.

Thermometers will be placed in your mailbox by Megan today.  Please open it up so it is ready in case you need to use it starting on Monday.

 Thanks to the PST Team for running the data meetings yesterday.  To clarify and answer questions from the grade level teams:  The mandatory Check For Understanding should not be another thing on your plate. It is simply encouraging the students that need it the most, to attend the CFU that they already could be attending and that you host everyday for all of your students.  Please remember that if a student is getting an F you should have called (not emailed) the parent already.  We know that the CFU will not be the same as HW club or check in/check out, but it is one thing we can try to help our students.  If the notification part is what is causing the extra anxiety, I can take that off of your plate and do it for you, just let me know.

I have been working on class lists in terms of balancing out the students who have siblings at Evergreen or in our building due to our 6th grade being split A-H and I-Z instead of the same as the rest of the district which is A-L and M-Z. This involves looking at each class list for #'s and calling parents to get all siblings to school on the same day.  Please know that the schedules will be as balanced as they can be but will not be evenly split between the days.
