The kids must be exhausted, because I know the adults are!  Thanks to Melissa and Matt for putting on the awesome musical  performances Thursday afternoon at the assembly, Thursday night at the concert and Friday morning at Evergreen.  I cannot recall a time that both staff and parents came to me with as much frequency to tell me how awesome the performances were.  They also could not have been done without the work of Danielle on the sound board and Mrs. S. (Sophia Johnson's mom) on piano!

Great writers on the power of music.

The highlight of my day was getting to teach 10 minutes of Mark's social studies class yesterday when he was solving the Case of the Double Dominos Pizza delivery! I'm so jealous of the student interactions teachers can make everyday as they deliver meaningful content instruction.  I used my time to go over the federal government  rights vs state government rights as listed (or not) in the constitution.  This resulted in many students input, discussion  and laughter as we uncovered the answers together.  Keep up the great job you are doing all day, everyday,  with these students. You are making a difference!

I cannot wait for Barb's retirement party today after school.  I am so thankful for the many years of service and dedication that Barb has shown to the LMC and students of Benjamin Middle School!

Thanks to Mark and Melissa F for running the state science test on Wednesday and to Greg and Ellen B for their support.  We are hoping to get the results of these tests in before they graduate high school so we can recycle the tests as thank you cards and send them to the state for their support!  :)

Red White and Beautiful was an awesome night.  The music, artwork, projects, PE presentations, healthy snacks, NJHS bake sale, photoshop videos and book fair were all a big success.  Most importantly it was a night of great conversations between teachers, parents and students.  Thanks to everyone who helped make this night a great success.

Thanks to Lynette and Jen for having the students make so many healthy snacks that teachers were able to grab bags of them for PARCC Testing.

PARCC testing is working well with students seeming to really enjoy our special schedule and being less stressed.  Most computer issues are solved by restarting the computer.  Special thanks to Michelle Fiorini for conducting the make-up testing as we go along.  One more day on the 25th!

Great picture of Wrigley Field!

Mrs. Morgan and Mrs. Incrocci are at Student Council State Convention this weekend with many students.   Mr. Bradbury and Mrs. Moore will be in Washington DC wit students starting on April 27th.  I want to thank these teachers as there is a lot of planning on top of giving up weekends and time with their family to make these trips a success.  These trips are valuable and engaging learning experiences that you can't get from reading a book in a classroom.

Thanks to Chris, Lauren, Jim, Keriann, Nicole and Todd for giving their presentation on the Learning and the Brain Conference.  When teachers get to go to a conference we want that information shared with the rest of the staff.  By presenting their favorite parts of the conference we get to have a general overview of ideas that on the surface level we may agree or disagree with or that intrigue us.  In order to gain from this experience the most important action that we must take is to take time to explore at least one of the concepts/ideas in more depth with the links that they provided.  Thanks again guys.

Continuous cycle of learning.

Thanks to Megan, Cathy and Betty who I watched yesterday do some real-time problem solving and propose some strategies they could try to help student learning while in an annual review meeting yesterday with a parent.  Sometimes we try to pre-plan and have all of the answers, but it is also important to listen to concerns, collaborate and adjust on the fly.  Great job!

We are moving forward in the adoption of the new ELA Program.  Pearson, My Perspectives program will be brought before the board for possible purchase.  I was able to observe a school that was using only the online platform with no book as a back-up.  The students were highly engaged and were happy to give me feedback as to the reasons they like the online platform.

Thanks to Dan for organizing the staff vs. student game.  The 8th grade boys were excited!

Thanks to everyone for their input on the master schedule for next year.  A decision was reached to have two sections of 5th and 6th grade special classes. In addition, we will be keeping the 1/2 time teaching position for next year. We will be moving to IMSA Fusion for our 5th, 7th and 8th grade technology special classes with a teaching assistant being scheduled in those classes for academic and program assistance. Finally, RTI Math classes were added to the existing ones for smaller class sizes with increased support.

I know grade level teams are scheduling trials for PARCC with Greg.  It is important to be able to catch the mistakes that will pop up as well as for teacher and student comfortability to have these trials.

The student musical Oklahoma was off the charts this past weekend.  The students were amazing and Melissa and Danielle put in a lot of work to make the production run smoothly.  Every year this event is a showcase for the amazing talent in our building.  Thank you.

Sometimes writing is about just sitting down and doing it.

Matt Tylk, Dan Baker, Nicole Colburn, Rich Feffer and Keriann Moore did a great job presenting the sports awards on Wednesday night.  It is nice to know that our students not only get great coaching, but great role models in their interactions with our staff.

Melissa and the choir performed beautifully Tuesday night at West Chicago High School. The students were thrilled to perform on the big stage and with the high school students.

Sherry did a great job of speaking to the 6th grade students about spanish opportunities that they have next year.  Making a decision between Spanish for 2 years or study skills can be a tough decision and now they are informed!

I'm going to try this challenge after spring break.  Anybody want to try it with me?

I hope that everyone has a wonderful spring break and gets to enjoy the time with their family and friends.

A good reminder that the struggle is necessary.

Thanks to everyone for participating in our Learning Meeting Discussion on the Master Schedule. I really do think it was a valuable conversation that helped us understand questions and misunderstandings.   I'm sure we will find a solution that helps kids and relies on our teaching strengths.
